Web Design 10 Big Mistakes

There are many errors in the web design world. Let’s take a look at what I believe are the 10 biggest ones.

1. Too Many Ads. When you are trying to make money with your website, it is very easy to crawl your site with ads.

Put yourself in your user's place and take a closer look at your site and ask yourself if the ads feel intrusive. Does the site look like a source of information or does it feel like it has an ad page?

2. Plugin Overload. You must limit the use of the plugin to type 1 on each page. If you have Flash, then you can't have a media player, or if you use Java, then there is no Flash. It’s not that bad to use the same plugin twice, though.

3. Flash Intros. Please do not use Flash introduction on your website. They are so overused that they are ridiculed everywhere.

4. Blurred Structure and Navigation. Many websites, especially business sites, suffer from some form of disease where the simplest task takes 10 steps. When users ask you how you do things on your site, you will need to improve your design and navigation. If there are some activities that people want to do regularly, put them on the front page.

 5. No external link marking. There are 2 types of links: internal (in some parts of your website) and external (in some websites). For the benefit of your users, it is best if you mark the external links, either by making them a different color or by using a certain type of symbol (the box with the arrow is the most common). It’s also good to make external links open in new windows, so people don’t leave your site completely when they click on them.

6. Unexplained linking. Some web pages are designed to display links only when people place their mouse over them. While this may make the makeup look good, it is not easy to use. Instead, use a clearly different color for the links, and choose to underline it. This makes them more visible to the user, thus easier to use.

7. Unlabeled email links. Always clearly mark the link that will send the email (mailto link) with the word 'email'. If you change the name by clicking on the email, you will annoy the users who were expecting to find out more about this person.

 8. Broken Links. You should check your links regularly to make sure they are all still working. There’s nothing worse than finding a site that looks useful, only to find that it hasn’t been updated over the years, so many links don’t work. While a website works automatically after a while, that doesn't mean you should ignore important care.

9. Strange Fonts. Stick to the most common web fonts: the best ones are Arial, Georgia, Tahoma and Verdana. If you use vague fonts, most users will not have them - and those who do will find your text difficult to read. The only place for unfamiliar fonts in your logo or titles, and only if they are displayed as an image.

10. Incompatible text. It is important to keep your text around a standard size. Making the text too big or too small makes it difficult to read and annoy many users. The best thing you can do is use a related text size (not pixels) that allows the browser to determine your user's preferred text size. You should also consider providing buttons on your site to reduce or increase the font size
